• AGE: 19 years of age or older.

• ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • One year sworn or non-sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Two years of active and continuous U.S. military service.
  • Two years of public contact experience.
  • Thirty semester-hours or 45 quarter-hours at an accredited college or university.

Employment preference is given to qualified applicants who have completed 60 semester-hours or 90 quarter-hours of college course work at an accredited college or university. Employment preference is given to qualified applicants who have two years of continuous U.S. Military service with an honorable discharge.

Employment preference is given to Florida Certified Law Enforcement Officers with one year of sworn law enforcement experience.

Veterans' Preference is given to veterans and spouses of veterans as outlined in Florida Statutes.

• PAID TRAINING: New Troopers receive 30 weeks of Law Enforcement Training at the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy in Tallahassee, Florida. Recruits are compensated $2,514.88 per month. Meals, lodging, training materials and physical fitness training are provided. Florida Certified Law Enforcement Officers receive nine weeks of Transitional Law Enforcement Training. Meals, lodging, equipment, physical fitness training, and study materials are also provided. All new hires will purchase training uniforms upon arrival at the FHP training academy.
• COMPETITIVE STARTING SALARIES: $33,977.04 annually ($38,976.84 in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach, Collier and Lee counties).
• EQUIPMENT: The Florida Highway Patrol provides all of the equipment required, including weapons.
• UNIFORMS AND DRY-CLEANING ALLOWANCE: All uniforms are supplied. Each Trooper receives $500 annually for dry-cleaning expenses.
• RETIREMENT BENEFITS: Troopers become vested in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) after six years of service. FRS is a contributory system, which means you pay toward your retirement. Florida also offers several deferred compensation retirement investment plans. We also participate in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP).
• EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVES: Troopers are eligible to receive $1,560 annually for the completion of career development courses and/or an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. We also offer a tuition free education plan and an educational leave with pay program for qualified employees. Troopers are encouraged to attend career development courses.
• LEAVE TIME: New Troopers receive 8:40 hours per month of sick leave and annual leave. We grant 17 days per year for military leave. The State recognizes nine paid holidays and one personal holiday per year. Employees may request six months of maternity leave.
• INSURANCE: We offer extensive insurance coverage for Health, Life, and Vision and Dentistry. Accident and Cancer insurances are also available.
• CREDIT UNION: Florida Highway Patrol Troopers have access to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Credit Union.
