Duty assignments are determined based upon position availability and agency needs. Candidates may be assigned to the Patrol Bureau or the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau (CVE). The Patrol Bureau’s primary functions are enforcing the State's criminal, traffic, motor vehicle and driver licensing laws that regulate the flow of traffic. Assist motorists, perform motor vehicle inspections and investigate traffic crashes. Troopers detect and apprehend impaired drivers and search for missing and wanted persons. Investigators work driver license fraud, identity theft and odometer fraud cases. CVE troopers enforce regulations of commercial motor vehicles ensuring safe highway transportation of hazardous materials and other commodities. Inspecting commercial drivers log books to assure hours of operation are within regulation. Verifying that drivers possess a valid CDL and hazardous materials permit (if applicable). Candidates may be assigned a duty assignment located throughout the State of Florida. Those candidates who are currently certified law enforcement officers will be offered a duty assignment prior to the start of their academy class. Candidates for Basic Recruit Training (those who are not yet certified law enforcement officers) will be given their duty assignments after they have begun the academy class and completed the state certification exam. This is generally in week 20 of the full basic recruit academy.

New recruits without law enforcement experience and/or Florida Law Enforcement Certification attend the Basic Recruit Academy.
An eight-week transitional academy is offered for Florida certified law enforcement officers. The training curriculum is physically demanding and regimented in a para-military format.
